Too Hot to Blog

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 5:30 pm on Monday, July 21, 2008

No, I’m not dead.

It’s been really hot.

I’m still slugging through my summer class.

I’ve had two more students get through independent study (a total of 4 in a year).

I’ve suspended access for 5 IS students (a total of, um, well, more than 4).

My training seminar is close to done (oh, did I mention that I’ve taught this training session before?). I have to get stuff ready to copy by next Monday.

Our first visitors arrive this week. (yay!)

Moral

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 1:22 pm on Friday, July 11, 2008

So, the moral of the story (see below) is to have a counter offer in mind.

They met the woman’s terms (not the original terms), but a good price.

Hee!

Um … No

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 12:44 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2008

Once upon a time, there was a woman who was approached to create a writing seminar for a small department. So, she researched the costs and created an outline of the seminar and a bid to cover costs.

It seems the bid was accepted. But, then there was the issue of payment. See, the woman cannot process a credit card payment. (Well, she could, but the paying party cannot use the method that the woman has access to.)

Apparently, while all of this was going on, the woman was unaware that she needed to work through the institution for which she works. Knowing this, she passed on her well-researched budget to the appropriate person.

She gets a polite lecture about how things are supposed to work. OK. No problem. She did not know the process.

Time passes.

Guess what happens next?

Yes!

They want pay her approximately half of what her well-researched budget outlined. They want to base her pay on what an adjunct would be paid.

She countered.

She’s waiting.

Move Along

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 4:54 pm on Tuesday, July 8, 2008

There’s not much going on here.

It’s hot.

The endless grading continues.

We saw Wall-E yesterday; it’s glorious.

How are you?

Time Flies

Our neighbor’s daughter (one of my library children) turned 7 yesterday; that means we have known her since she was 2.

Crazy!

Unrelated …

My back is being a pain. Literally. V. limited computing today.

More unrelated …

Molly heard her first fireworks yesterday. I think she’ll be OK. Utah seems to celebrate with explosives all month long. So, if last night was any indication, she’ll get through July without tranquilizers or vicious barking.

Any plans for the 4th?

First Step

I meet with the person who will take over the independent study course today.

Woohoo!!

It’s Time

Yes. It’s time.

We have the AC on.

Aaahhhhhh ….

Yoke Free

I gave up my independent study class today.

I won’t miss the money.

I have to finish up with the ones I have, so in about six months I’ll be free.

Hello Internets!

I’ve missed you!

Best. Song. Evah.

If I were still single and dating, I would SO have this song on repeat. (Sound NSFW.)

It also, oddly, reminds me of Limon and AM. But, in a heartwarming way.

Oh, and Kir would have *loved* it. (Makes me MISS her.)

A First

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 9:33 am on Friday, June 20, 2008

Scott and I have donated to a political campaign.

Barak Obama keeps impressing me.

BTW, the Obama’s celebratory “fist bump” was very cute.

Donate if you can (and if you support Mr. Obama). Most of the contributions are in the $5 to $20 range.

Thoughts?

Summer brown.

Appropriate, no?

Oh. My. Dog.

Molly hates the heat. She just wilts around 1:30 in the afternoon. That’s when we head downstairs; she lays on the cool tile.

We can’t take her out for her afternoon run until 8:00pm.

Scott and I are going phone shopping in a few minutes. I had an unlocked blackberry, but it’s on the ATT network (I use t-mobile pay-go), and it won’t connect to the internets. So, if I take a picture of, say, Molly at the park and want to send it to Scott (or my mom or anyone), I can’t. Since we just got paid, now would be the time to look.

BTW, if you watch Hell’s Kitchen, may I just say how happy I am that Jen is gone! She is one annoying human (I’m sure the editors had a field day selecting her annoying moments).

Stay cool.

The Move

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 1:44 pm on Monday, June 16, 2008

Yes, it’s that time.

We’ve begun the move to live out the heat of the day in the lovely, cool basement.

Perhaps we can stave off the A/C until August.

How’s the heat in your part of the world?

* Finances are freaking me out. I mean we’re not talking imminent ruin, not by a long stretch. It’s just the price of *everything* is so high.

* I worry about Christmas travel. A lot. (See above re: price.) I usually start worrying about it in February; this year is no exception. When does it get too expensive to travel? Where do you draw the line?

* Maxx has been the sweetest bird lately. I’ve been trying to give her more attention.

* Still heart the Wii and Wii Fit is the best. thing. evah.

* Our grocery list is so long, and we’re between pay checks (see above re: finances), that we’re going to have to buy selectively.

* I’ve started designating a “Best Subject Line of the Week” award for my online students’ discussion posts.

* Molly has discovered the trash. Scott found her munching on an old tomato. So, yesterday I put up the baby gate and put the trashcan behind it. Scott asked if the trash was in time out.

* I need to start researching a paper for an October conference. This week, I promise.

Moving On

Here’s the deal–I teach an independent study course and it’s sucking the life out of me. So, I’m passing it on. I just sent out the email.

On the online summer class front, I have only one more individual assignment to grade. After that, it’s all group stuff (and the return of my sanity).

I need a day off.

Yeah, So?

Day 3

Filed under: General — tomorrow at 8:18 pm on Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Stu, I have wasted three days dealing with you. I understand you’re upset. But, when you sign up for an independent study course, and you do not submit assignment for 5 months, you will not be able to complete the course in a month (even if you get a 30 day extension).

Three. days.

No, there will be no refund. (Remember the 5 months you wasted? Remember not submitting any assignments?)

Three. days.

(And, it’s still not over. I should hear tomorrow if this situation has been resolved*.)

* I used the passive voice here because I did not cause the problem. It’s an admin problem, and that’s all I can say.

They’ve got the whole entry to the drive torn out.

And, since I took the pic, another guy has shown up to help.
